1909-O Indian Half Eagle

The 1909-O Indian Head Half Eagle is the lowest mintage coin of the series, with just 34,200 pieces produced for circulation. Additionally, this is the only issue from this type that was struck at the New Orleans Mint. These two factors make this an extremely popular coin.

As can be expected, examples are rare in all grades, and considerably so in mint state. Two major varieties exist, one with a weakly impressed mintmark, which is doubled, and the other with a strong mintmark. The latter is the scarcest and usually sells for a bit more money when offered at auction, although examples usually offered are low grade or bagged uncirculated condition. This issue has proven to be a prime rarity in gem condition, as are many of the series.
